Andrew Wheeler to be nominated EPA chief

President Donald Trump said he would nominate Andrew Wheeler, currently acting as the Environmental Protection Agency administrator, to officially take the position. This was announced by President Trump while he was “leading a Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony at the White House,” according to an article from The New York Times. Wheeler filled in this position after Scott Pruitt resigned in July during allegations against his use of the position, or as the CNN article puts it, “under a cloud of scandal.”

Wheeler’s background is mostly against the regulation of environmental protections, as he was a former coal lobbyist in addition to his actions as acting EPA administrator to reduce regulations imposed on oil, gas, and other non-renewable energy resources. During the Trump administration so far there have been 76 rollbacks recorded by The New York Times which, according to the article, Wheeler has been essential to seeing through. A confirmation vote will be required for Wheeler to receive the position. With the midterm election results, the CNN article states that might include being asked about the administration’s approach to the regulations of chemicals, emissions and water quality by Democrats.

This all comes to the surface as another CNN article covers a report that finds the G20 group of major world economies, which includes the United States, are not prepared to tackle climate change.  These countries account for 80 percent of the global greenhouse gas emissions according to the article citing the World Resources Institute.
