Opinion: What Trump’s support of Kavanaugh can tell us about his idea of respect

This is an opinion article and is only intended to spark conversation, not to target anyone or to make false claims. This is the opinion of the author alone.

Through the #MeToo movement, the efforts of individuals who have been victims of sexual assault, violence, or harassment have come forward against popular figures. Many, but not all, of those accused of sexual assault have been shunned in their industry, lost their jobs and/or money, or faced other consequences for the actions – however long ago those actions may have been.

That’s why when Dr. Christine Blasey Ford stepped forward to disclose her sexual assault story of supreme court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh I was not surprised. It was another significant case in the public movement and caused more women to come out to share their stories as well. Yet again, President Donald Trump acknowledged them.

He acknowledged they are women who have claims of something terrible happening to them. He also acknowledged their attacks against someone who he deemed a “wonderful man.”

If a wonderful man is someone who lies in a position of power and who covers up his own wrongdoings to gain authority, is this an example of how Trump views the term “wonderful?” If so, maybe that could indicate his administration’s decisions to cut down regulations involving the environment or cuts on research and education, key elements to understanding the earth and the world we live in. It could also be a reason for his decisions to hire corrupt individuals, politicians or otherwise, to run the Environmental Protection Agency or other offices that affect environmental standards and education.

I believe it shows that he simply could care less.
To Trump, it seems as though what will make him money and what will make him more powerful is all that matters. It is a wonderful gift in life, after all, to be able to have enough money to make it through and have your friends there to help you. At least that’s what Trump does. His friends, or those who are willing to cover up his suggested corruption, scandals, and mistakes are always backed by him, and his loyal family will always have food on the table and a roof over their heads. His cuts to help promote the oil and gas industry skyrocket and cut down national parks and monuments are simply physical manifestations of this ideal he carries proudly.

A viral tweet from @verygooster of women’s reactions at Brett Kavanaugh.

Judge Kavanaugh did show America exactly why Trump nominated him. The women sitting behind him with faces disarrayed in shock, anger, and disgust, told us why this is just another version of disrespect to the people of this land. If he treats women this way, how is he treating our resources? How is he protecting our Earth? What is he planning for the future of our children?

From my perspective, he is doing the same thing to survivors of sexual assault that he is doing to the land:

Disrespect.
